Honestly, my first heartbreak--

so I loved bugs as a little girl.

I captured a caterpillar

and we built a stick bridge over the drain.

I don't know why we did it over a drain.

But his name was Mister Furby Wurby,

and as he was crossing over the bridge

he fell into the drain.

And I cried for a couple of days.

[Saweetie laughs]

That was my first heartbreak, a caterpillar.

What's up, Teen Vogue?

It's the Icy Girl, Saweetie,

and today I will be sharing some of my firsts.

[upbeat music]

Ooh.

Some big hoops.

[Saweetie chuckles] Colored skinny jeans.

I was a jerker.

[Saweetie laughs]

I don't know why, but like a highlighter yellow.

I hope those pictures never come out.

[Saweetie laughs]

I think my first billboard entry

was the first time I felt like I made it.

It was My Type.

My first song, Icy Grl.

Can't stop, won't stop, get guap.

It was my first song ever,

so Icy Grl was the first song I sampled and cleared.

I think that I woulda just took myself

like, a lot less serious, as like a young woman.

Being a firstborn,

I don't know if other firstborns feel like this,

you always just feel an immense pressure to be perfect,

in everything you do, but I feel like with art,

you can't do that.

So I wish I would've cared less when I was younger,

like, in the beginning of my musical career.

I wish I woulda just made more mistakes as a younger woman.

The first trait I look for in a best friend is

someone that doesn't gossip.

I don't like people that talk about other people

'cause if you're talkin' 'bout them,

you gon' talk about me too.

Lip gloss, the first makeup product I was ever obsessed with

was definitely lip gloss.

I love me some Beauty Supply Store, one dollar

[lips pop] lip gloss.

And girl, I don't even wanna get negative.

The rumors, you know?

I'm vibin' too high, I don't even hear 'em.

[Saweetie sighs]

I mean, it just depends on what type of girl you are.

I feel like if it's--

every song has like a vibe that any woman can connect to,

but I think like, to get the party started,

I think Boss Chick.

What I love about being single is--

there's a lot of things that I like.

I like not worrying about somebody, you know?

I hate when like, you don't get the text back or the call

and you just like, What are you doing?

[Saweetie laughs]

I love the stress-free lifestyle of being single.

My first braiding experience was with a big,

like the big, bobblehead Bratz Doll,

I'm not sure if it's a bobblehead but anyways.

I would just like, always braid her hair

in different patterns.

[Saweetie laughs]

Honestly, my degree has--

I think the experiences in college has came in handy,

and my degree is a representation of that,

but, you know, I do have one of those careers

where you don't necessarily need a degree.

However, I am really grateful for what I learned

at San Diego State and USC.

One thing that I think a lot of artists should know

about their business is,

you are only as strong as your team,

and I think that a lot of people

don't understand the importance of that,

but as an artist, you can't do everything yourself.

So you always have to make sure there's

strong, loyal, smart, loving team players

around you because it affects like, your ecosystem.

My first crazy food pairing, honestly,

I get my cravings from my Paw Paw and my dad.

My concoctions, they're not crazy to me,

but the world will think different, so.

There was a summer where all of me and my cousins

stayed at my grandma's house, and I got hella cousins,

so the only thing we'd eat is just like,

Top Ramon and hot dogs.

So, when you're constantly eating the same thing

over and over again, you know, you got to spice it up.

But, I love a beef hotdog;

the bun, put a slice of cheese,

put some barbecue sauce and some mayonnaise on it,

hella good with a Capri Sun.

My first extravagant manicure was actually by myself,

done by myself.

I've always been a nail girl.

So, I used to do my own nails.

I would always do hot pink and turquoise,

and I would do like, cheetah-print designs

with like, silver glitter, gold glitter,

and my nails was always done.

My homegirl, Jasmine did it.

I went to school with her.

Shout out to her, she has a salon now,

I'm proud of her.

San Diego State, I went there my freshman and sophomore year

and then I transferred to USC,

and when I got to L.A. I was like,

Dang, why everybody got long hair?

So, once I figured out that people was adding in bundles,

I'm like, Well I'm gonna get some bundles too.

So, I think I was a sophomore.

So, when I used to get my sew ins,

I would keep my for like three months.

You know, you gotta make it stretch, as a college girl.

I think the first rule to being a bad bitch is,

believing your a bad bitch, you know.

And by that, I mean like self-love,

'cause we do not like a pretentious bad bitch, you know.

You can fake that shit on Instagram,

but you can't fake it in real life.

So, love yourself and that's the ultimate trick

and you know, secret to being the ultimate bad bitch.

Ooh, I don't know.

I feel like, I know that's right,

I feel like I grew up saying, I know that's right.

I think I just--

I know that's right became my thing

when my fans made a compilation of me saying,

I know that's right on like several occasions,

and then, after that, it kind of just stuck.

I had a really like, colorful childhood,

like, I'm so thankful to be a part of the generation

that actually played outside.

I remember just, always pushing it,

because like, my curfew as a child,

the the street lights.

I'd be sprinting on the way home like,

Ooh, I hope my daddy don't, you know,

I hope I don't get in trouble.

I just always remember trying to be the street lights home

because I loved being outside, as a kid.

Sometimes the street lights wouldn't come on yet,

for daylight savings, and I'm just like,

Dad, you say street lights, not the sun.

[Saweetie laughs]

Honestly, I think I'm at a point in my life

where if I wanna get closer to someone like,

I think we gotta go to like, the arcade on the first date,

or something that requires like, teamwork or effort,

'cause I wanna know like, your true vibes;

are you fun, can you communicate,

can you actually hold a conversation?

You know?

Like, no movies 'cause we staring at the screen.

Food dates is played out, but I wanna like,

go on an adventure.

I don't know if I would consider this an influence,

but a song, one artist that I really loved growing up,

Mamma Mia was like a really big song in the,

my Philippino household so, I would say like,

that might be a shock to some people,

but that's my song.

My first favorite rapper, Tupac.

I'm a West Coast girl so, my parents grew up listening to--

well, I grew up listening to Tupac, through my parents.

The first thing that I associate--

well, I'm not a rapper, I'm a brand.

[Saweetie laughs]

I used to get grounded a lot.

Um, I think the funniest grounding experience was like,

before I would go out and play, I had to clean;

like, do the dishes, do chores, do my homework.

And I remember I wanted to go out so bad, like,

I was in a rush,

so I got everything in my room and I stuffed it

under my bed.

The way I made my bed, it just looked funny

'cause I pulled the cover down to like,

cover the bottom of the bed, so it was a dead giveaway.

So my mom was like,

How the hell you clean your room so fast?

She was like, Did you clean it?,

and I was like, Yeah.

Girl, she picked up that blanket so fast,

and because I had lied, I had got grounded,

but that story always makes me laugh.

I think this year, I think me taking a break intentionally,

and sitting out for almost a year

with music and social media,

it was like, it took a lot.

Especially during the summer time

'cause, you know, I'm a summer girl.

So, I really, I've been wanting to release music so bad

and the fact that I'm finally here and I'm dropping music,

I just feel so accomplished,

and I'm so happy that I waited,

I was patient, and I took time

because art shouldn't be rushed.

The one that I was really just excited about

was the McDonald's meal, only because like,

I grew up eating McDonald's,

the golden arches, you know?

You know like when you were driving by McDonald's,

you ask like, your mom, your dad, or your auntie

for some McDonald's and they be like,

You got some McDonald's money?

[Saweetie laughs]

So just being that little girl,

to like being the face of McDonald's, globally,

it just was like a dream, it was like a fairy tale almost.

Like, when I got the offer, I thought it wasn't true.

So, my order is always lengthy,

I get a McChicken, I like to stack it with a cheeseburger,

fries, ranch, and sweet and sour sauce, with a 7-up, Sprite.

Mmm.

[bell dings]

Aaliyah. Um, Wet Seal.

I don't know.

Um, dying my bangs in high school.

I don't remember.

[Saweetie chuckles]

I think like 5th grade.

Ooh, I remember his name, his name was Jeovonni.

[Saweetie laughs]

Oh, my G-Wagon.

Aaliyah.

[nails click] I don't know about that.

Victoria's Secret or Abercrombie,

it was one of those.

A cobra.

Oh, I don't know.

Alohababy59.

Um, Destiny's Child.

I don't remember.

This weekend, this past weekend.

Girl, these edge been like, since I popped out the womb.

[Saweetie chuckles]

Finish this tea.

[Saweetie laughs]

I'm hella cold right now.

Teen Vogue, I love you so much.

Thank you for having me.

It's Ice Grl out, mwah.

[upbeat music fades]
