The Merrell Twins Share Their First Crush, YouTube Video & More

One of the first times I've ever seen myself

on an airplane screen was because of Jane the Virgin.

Yeah, that was weird when I saw that.

They had the full first season, and I went

to episode six and I was like, [gasp]

Everyone, that's me!

Maybe they'll see me and realize.

It didn't happen.

It didn't happen. It didn't happen.

I'm Veronica.

I'm Vanessa.

[Both] We're the Merrell twins

and these are our firsts.

My first crush was in kindergarten.

His name was Brandon.

He was such a cutie.

She ended up liking him too.

Yeah, he was also my first crush.

[giggling]

He was also her first kiss and my first kiss.

I don't really count that.

Do we?

[humming]

I think that is the only time me and you

have ever crushed on the same guy.

That is the only time, because I moved on

immediately, because I was like, hm, I don't want him.

And I was like, I want Seth!

[laughing] I don't think he wanted me.

I don't even know who Seth is!

My first celebrity crush is probably

Hayden Christensen because of Star Wars.

The first celebrity crush would have to be Ryan Sheckler.

[gasps] Oh!

I think that's up there too.

Yeah, I definitely had a poster of him in my room.

I did, too.

First text I sent today was to Erin,

my friend Erin.

I said, Good morning!

My first text was OMG that's so cute, no way!

To who?

Because my friend Hadia sent me a video

of her friend's daughter watching our videos.

Oh, what a good way to wake up.

I know that was my first text.

I was like, oh!

I didn't wake up to any text.

I had to create the morning text.

Ooh, first thought I had.

I need to wake up!

That was my first thought, because my alarm clock,

I had slept 30 minutes over the time I was

supposed to wake up.

My first thought this morning was kinda the same thing.

Like, it's not a surprise, we're twins.

But I did think like, oh my gosh.

How much longer can I sleep?

[giggles] Instead of like, oh I have to get up now,

I was like, can I sleep a little longer?

I can do my makeup more quickly today. [laughs]

But my second thought after that,

if you want to know, like outside of

sleeping and stuff, it was who's liked my

picture on Instagram?

Oh my goodness.

I went through all my notifications. [laughing]

If you would of asked me that question yesterday,

it would have been how many views did our TikTok get?

[laughing]

Mine did not get as many as hers.

Our first best friend would probably be--

Each other!

Each other.

You were gonna say someone else.

I was gonna say Emily and Jordan.

Oh yeah!

We were in kindergarten, in preschool,

we had these two other best friends

and they were twins as well.

But they were fraternal.

I still follow them on Instagram.

Do we really talk, no.

No, but I still know what they're doing.

Yeah.

[Both] The first time we went on a plane.

The first time I can remember, is when

we went to Europe with our family.

They were giving out food because it was lunch time,

and they put a salad in front of me,

and five year old me was like, What is this?

I do not eat salads.

I eat chicken nuggets.

Yeah! [laughing]

One of the first celebrities I met

out here in L.A. was Kylie Jenner

and Ariana Grande at the same house party.

Yep, I was like, Hi, I'm Veronica.

And she was so small, Ariana Grande,

she was so small, and I was like,

Hi, nice to meet you.

And she was like, Hi, I'm Ariana.

And I was like [laughs].

That's when she was dating Jai Brooks.

[Both] That's a major throwback.

In her song, talking about all her exes,

[Both] She doesn't even mention him!

Who's the first person you text when

something exciting happens?

If I'm away from my family, it'll be you guys.

But if I'm with my family, then it's my friend, Erin.

Yeah, either you or I just keep it to myself.

Or it's who you're talking to at the moment.

Oh yeah, if it's a guy I'm talking to

at the moment, I tell him.

Mm-hmm.

That's not a thing right now.

[giggling]

Our first concert we ever went to.

Ready, one, two, three.

[Both] High School Musical!

[laughing]

It was when they went on tour and

Zac Efron couldn't go because he was

filming Seventeen Again, and we were

so upset about it, but we were still very excited.

We sang all the songs, they did all the dances and stuff.

It was great.

It was the best concert ever.

The first movie I remember seeing.

I kind of just go to Aristocats.

Oh, or maybe we watched a Veggie Tales movie.

Ah, Veggie Tales.

Veggie Tales and Aristocats.

That's what comes to mind.

Disney, like Lion King, Snow White.

I feel like Aristocats was one of the first ones.

It's one of the first ones we fell in love with.

Oh, 'cause Lion King was kind of scary.

If you think about it, it really was.

It's a scary movie.

Also, Tarzan is too.

Tarzan's very scary.

Very frightening.

First instrument I ever played was piano.

Yeah same.

We started playing piano when we were five years old.

It wasn't something our parents forced us to do.

We asked to play.

Then we were told we had to practice,

and then that's when we wanted to quit.

[laughing]

But, we continued.

Continued until we were like 12.

That's when our parents forced us to keep going.

Yeah.

And then eventually we started playing

other instruments.

You play violin.

I play violin.

And then the guitar. And then guitar.

Yeah, yeah. The rest is history.

First was piano.

If you can play piano, you can play

almost every other instrument.

First song I remember learning how to play

was Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Not too epic.

Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding.

[laughing] That's how we would play it.

First expensive purchase was a St. Laurent hoodie.

It didn't even say St. Laurent on it.

It just said Love me forever, and then

on the back it said, Or never.

I'm like, yeah, I bought my first designer hoodie.

And then I'm like, well dang, what's the purpose

of not having it say St. Laurent?

No one knows it's St. Laurent now.

I still have it.

If we're talking about designer designer,

like high end, it was those Prada boots

that we did for Boujee.

We did a video where we pretended we were

being extravagant and spending money for a week.

For Boujee.

For Boujee, and we bought a pair of Prada boots.

It was crazy.

[Both] Our first pet.

It was a cat, his name was Skye.

He was a Siamese Himalayan cat.

Very beautiful and elegant and fluffy

and just the kindest cat.

And then we got our second cat, Corky,

a few years later, and Skye was so

patient with Corky.

Corky-- Corky would lick him and

Skye would sit down like this.

He'd be like, when will this be done?

First thing I do every morning--

Besides being on the phone,

or after being on the phone?

[laughing] Because I get my phone

and that's the first thing I do.

Mainly what I've been doing is,

I wake up and I check Twitter right away.

'Cause that's my news source

and I wanna see what's going on in the world.

So then I'm like, Did you hear about this?

After that, I guess technically the first

thing I do out of bed is use the bathroom.

[laughing]

Gotta go!

[laughing] That's it!

[Both] Ooh, our first trip to L.A.

We were very, very young.

We can't even remember it.

But the first time we can remember it--

We were like 12, and it was more like--

Meetings. Meetings.

We were trying to get a manager.

Trying to find an agent, and that kinda stuff.

And then we realized in order to

get a manager and agent you have to live in L.A.

[laughs] And so we were like--

[Both] Oh!

'Cause we lived in Missouri at the time,

so we were like--

[Both] Oh.

And then one of the second times

or third times we went to L.A.,

we saw Kim Kardashian.

Oh my goodness!

But it was before she was absolutely huge.

Yeah, paparazzi was following this woman,

and we were like--

It was just as the Kardashians were

starting out and stuff,

and we were like, eh, we don't care.

But now I'm like, ah man!

Oh, our first trip to New York City.

I think we were like 17?

We only had one night to be there,

so I was like, I need pizza now.

That's the only thing I want is New York pizza

before we leave.

I don't care about anything else.

We don't even need to go to Times Square,

I just want pizza.

So we ended up walking with this group to go

[Both] Find pizza.

And we were just walking and walking--

And then all of a sudden, I'm like,

Hey, there's lights over there.

Let's go that way, I'll bet there's

New York pizza that way, where all those lights are.

We turned the corner and it was boom--

Boom! Times Square.

Like all these lights, and we were just like,

we were like [gasps] I was so shocked.

When you expect pizza but it's Times Square instead,

you're just like, oh my gosh.

Yeah, the people we were with, they had

been to Times Square before so they were like,

Come on, let's go.

And we were like, no, where..

No, wait, we accidentally walked to Times Square!

Oh my goodness.

Our first YouTube video.

[Both] What it's like to be a twin.

Actually, the talent show.

No.

Which we don't talk about that.

We have a talent show and a cheer routine

uploaded as some of the first videos,

along with what it's like to be a twin.

We count our first video as our first sketch.

We just don't talk about the other ones.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Oh, the first time we ever saw ourselves on TV.

It's a long story.

Our first audition we went for was a

[Both] Build-A-Bear commercial.

We booked the role.

They couldn't decide between which twin

to put in the commercial so they--

They picked me to use my face and stuff.

And they were like, But Veronica,

we'd love to use your hands!

So you only saw my hands.

When I saw the commercial aired, I was like,

Wait for it, wait for it!

And all of a sudden you see this little bear

go off the shelf.

[giggles] That was my debut.

Paid for braces.

Mm-hmm.

My parents are very thankful for that commercial.

First time we saw ourselves on a TV show.

[Both] Jane the Virgin.

We played the evil twin step-sisters.

We were very mean.

Mean and bratty. Very mean to her.

Which was a very fun role to play.

We like being mean when it's acting.

[Both] Not in real life.

First red carpet?

Star Wars?

[Both] The Force Awakens.

It was the first time I wore a dress

with a slit in it, and then it was a sheer kinda top.

We went all out for that.

We were like, oh my goodness!

We feel so glamorous.

Like Star Wars, cast us in the next movies.

And then the photographers, the press,

they take your pictures and then you can

go online and you can look it up,

and it has the little name of the person

who took it and you're like, oh my goodness!

I was like, that's me! That's me!

So those were some of our firsts.
