Rowan Blanchard and Storm Reid Talk About Their Firsts

First impression of Oprah?

Like that's crazy, I'm meeting Oprah?

(upbeat rock music)

Hi, it's Rowan.

Storm Reid.

And we're going to play a game of firsts with Teen Vogue.

Woo hoo.

What was your first audition?

Oh, wow.

I know.

That was a long time ago.

It's a long time ago for both of us!

11 years. The first audition I remember was, I think,

my audition for the PBS Sprouts commercial I did.

I was layin' in bed, and had a dog that came to wake me up

for breakfast, and that was on PBS Sprouts.

What was your first audition, Rowan?

My first audition was for this commercial that only aired

in Russia that I still have never seen. I just went into the

room and I wore my hair in like little milkmaid braids

and just had to run around.

Oh really?

Yeah. And I got it!

Yes! (laughing)

And that's when I know I was gonna be an actress.

Instagram.

Instagram, it's either Instagram or Snapchat.

Oh, I don't have Snapchat anymore.

Really?

Yeah, I took it off.

I don't post on Snapchat,

I just like to see what my friends are doing.

What was your first impression of Ava Duvernay?

I was blown away. I was just like OMG.

I think I was shocked. And I was just like hi,

I'm Storm Reid. You're like, you're a director goddess.

Yeah, literally.

I auditioned one time and then the next time I came in

I saw her, and when she first saw me it was just like

open arms. And yeah, she just gave me this big hug

and she was like, Oh my god, we are so excited!

And I was like, ah!

First impression of Oprah.

Like that's crazy, I'm meeting Oprah?

And we were in pre-production and she was getting

her hair done, and I walk in the room,

and of course you're nervous, like,

you're about to meet Oprah.

Yeah.

This is what I was thinking.

And she was like, Storm! And I was like, she knows my name!

Oh, my god, insane!

What was your first impression?

I have not met Oprah.

That's right!

Are you kidding me?

If I met Oprah, I don't know if I'd be here today.

Her premiere, wow.

One time when I was shadowing Ava,

I walked past her trailer, and just the knowledge

that she was in there was really overwhelming.

Who was your first mentor?

Hmm, mentor.

Well we're gonna discard that word, Ms. Ava says.

Yeah, Ava wants to rethink that word.

Yes, but I guess I would say my first like inspiration

would be my mom.

Same.

Yeah, my mommy. She's taught me everything that I know,

so she's my inspiration, my mentor.

Our moms were our first guides.

Yes, guides, that's a good word.

I like that. Your first role model?

My mama, too.

I love this.

Yeah. My mom, I just learn everything from her.

I have to say my mom as well, because otherwise I'm a

really bad person (laughing). When you think of the person

of the first person that you have to look to,

it's always your mom.

It's your mom, mm hmm.

OK, Storm, the first book you ever loved?

I hope I don't slaughter the name.

What is it?

Where the Wild Things Are.

You didn't slaughter the name!

Okay, I was just making ... Slaughter the name!

I was so intrigued by that book like OMG this is so cool!

I remember in first grade reading Junie B. Jones

and that was really, really important, and then in third

grade I did a book report on A Wrinkle in Time,

and now we're here!

Yay! Okay, this we shot together the first day.

Yeah, I actually forgot this, the first thing that they

shot was us together.

Was us, but you're just yelling ...

Yeah, my first line is just yelling at her.

And then I say, Veronica and I turn around and I throw

Throw the ball at my face!

Yes, I sure do.

I remember that!

I don't think I have a on-set ritual. I just go with the

flow, and I just love the vibe and the people that are

around me and I love what I'm doing,

so I don't think I have a on-set ritual. How 'bout you?

I don't think I have one either but there was stuff like

that Ava did that I think she does on most of her sets.

The day before we filmed, she gathered everybody who was

there from the crew and from the cast and we all held hands.

Do you remember that?

Yes, I do, and you start crying.

Oh, my God, now I start crying watching you two cry

and it was just like everybody was crying.

Emotional!

Oh! (laughing)
